Afirmativas
As frases afirmativas no past contínuous são compostas do sujeito mais o verbo TO BE no passado, seguido dogerúndio do verbo principal. Veja alguns exemplos:

- They were reading (eles estavam lendo)
- I was learning (eu estava aprendendo)

* Lembrete: tabela do verbo TO BE no passado:

I – Was
You – Were
He – Was
She – Was
It – Was
We – Were
You – Were
They – Were

Interrogações
As frases interrogativas do past continuous apenas trocam o sujeito principal com o gerúndio do verbo, como no Presente Contínuo:

- Were they reading? (Eles estavam lendo?)
- Was I learning? (Eu estava aprendendo?)

Negações
Para converter uma frase afirmativa do past continuous para negativa, basta apenas adicionar o NOT depois do verbo TO BE:

- They were not (weren’t) reading (eles não estavam lendo)
- I was not (wasn’t) learning (eu não estava aprendendo)

Conceito 

O Past Continuous é uma ação que teve uma duração em um passado estabelecido, ou uma ação que foi interrompida. 

Exemplo: 

A noiva já estava se dirigindo para o altar quando cheguei na Igreja. 


Estrutura Sintática 

Esse tempo é formado pelo passado do verbo to be (was/ were) e pelo sufixo –ing acrescido ao verbo principal. A estrutura sintática das sentenças segue o modelo: 

Sujeito + Verbo to be conjugado no passado (was, were) + Verbo principal acrescido do sufixo –ing + Complemento 


Situações de Uso 

a) Ação que estava ocorrendo no momento em que uma outra a interrompeu. Neste caso, o Past Continuousé geralmente utilizado com as conjunções: when, while e as. 

Exemplo: 

When I arrived, Tom was talking on the phone. 

b) Em ações simultâneas. 

Exemplo: 

They were sleeping while I was reading. 


Outros Exemplos: 

I’m australian, but I was spending a few months over in Britain. (Eu sou australiano, mas estava passando alguns meses na Inglaterra.) 

I was watching TV when the phone rang. (Eu estava assistindo à TV quando o telefone tocou.) 

The dress she was wearing was awful. (O vestido que ela estava usando era horrível.) 

He was drawing when his mother arrived. (Ele estava desenhando quando sua mãe chegou.)

Past Continuous

O passado contínuo é usado para se referir a uma situação que estava em andamento em um determinado momento do passado. A construção do passado contínuo deve ser dada segundo a forma:

Sujeito + verbo “to be” no passado (was/were) + verbo com “ing” + complemento.

She was working yesterday night. (Ela estava trabalhando ontem à noite).
He was working at the college. (Ele estava trabalhando na universidade).
The dog was barking a lot yesterday night. (O cachorro estava latindo muito noite passada).

Para a forma negativa, basta acrescentar o “not” após o passado do verbo “to be”(was/were):

They were not studying when I arrived home. (Eles não estavam estudando quando eu cheguei em casa).
I was not traveling last week. (Eu não estava viajando semana passada).
We were not playing cards during the class. (Nós não estávamos jogando baralho durante a aula).

Para elaborar uma frase interrogativa é necessário colocar o passado do verbo “to be” (was/were) no início da frase:

Was Lisa copying Marianne’s exercises? (A Lisa estava copiando os exercícios da Marianne?)
Was Bob riding a horse with his friends on the farm yesterday? (O Bob estava andando a cavalo com seus amigos na fazenda ontem?)
Were you two dancing during the P.E. class yesterday? (Vocês dois estavam dançando durante a aula de Educação Física ontem?)
